Abbotsford joy after London loss
YOUNG Australian duo Caroline Buchanan and Sam Willoughby did not conquer the world in the London Olympics.
They made sure they did in the final round of the BMX World Cup Series in Canada.
The pair made up for the disappointment of missing out on winning gold at the Games by being crowned world champions in Abbotsford.
Buchanan, who failed to medal in London, did not have an easy ride to victory.
The girl from Canberra crashed early in her final but managed to get back on her bike to finish fifth behind the winner, Dutchwoman Laura Smulders, while Aussie teammate Kirsten Dellar was second.
Despite the her fall, Buchanan, who won a record six consecutive time trials during the series, finished on 780 points overall, 93 clear of French rider Magalie Pottier.
Olympic silver medallist Willoughby needed to finish ahead of American leader Connor Fields in his final to retain the overall title - he did.
Fields got caught in a crash as Willoughby raced past to finish second behind Dutch rider Twan van Gendt.
The Adelaide rider finished with 743 points, 21 clear of Fields with van Gendt in third overall.
To complete a great season, Australia finished the series as the leading nation.
