ALP won’t break ties to CSG giant

LABOR has voted with the Liberals and Nationals to block a Senate motion detailing its failure to return about $90,000 in political donations from coal seam gas company Santos.

The Greens launched the Federal Senate motion on Thursday after NSW Labor agreed to hand back $2200 in donations from Santos.

The motion by Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon also called for a ban on political donations from mining and coal seam gas companies.

"Labor's failure to return all the money they have received from Santos seriously undermines their credibility on standing with residents opposed to CSG," she said. "They have been left looking insincere and (like) opportunists."

Greens candidate for Ballina Tamara Smith said the decision to block the motion showed Labor was "trying to have it both ways".

"It must stand with local communities to protect our land - or be upfront about its ties to the industry," she said.
