An injection of youth
SKIN needling. Just hearing the name makes you wince.
However, this treatment to restore a healthy youthful glow to tired skin is pretty much pain free (okay, there's a mild bit of discomfort) and wow, does it produce results.
Here's how it works. A qualified therapist will cleanse your face, then apply a numbing cream.
You wait 40 minutes for the cream to work, take your place on the therapist's table and let her roll a small roller of super-fine needles all over your face.
The micro-needles penetrate the top layers of the skin and create pin-point injuries in the deeper layers.
The body's natural healing kicks in, in response to this mild invasion and new collagen and elastin are formed.
That sums it up simply. The numbing cream prevents any real pain, it's more like a tingling all over the face - and the procedure is quick, all over in 10 minutes.
"The skin needling concept is based on the skin's natural ability to repair itself when it encounters physical damage," Donna Gordon, paramedical skin specialist at Cozmedics Medical Group said.
"Immediately after an injury occurs to the skin, the body removes the damaged collagen and elastin and other structures and replaces it with new components. The result is smoother, firmer and younger-looking skin."
I can vouch for Ms Gordon's comments now I've had three skin needling sessions.
My skin has been around for more decades than I care to reveal, and it has had its share of weathering over the long years.
Teenage sunburn and the general wear of daily living have left it looking tired - and while my expectations of improvement from skin needling were not high, after about two weeks I was surprised to notice a significant improvement.
My skin looks smoother, tighter, more...dare I say it?...glowing.
"Medical Skin Needling helps reduce wrinkles, lines and sun damage," Ms Gordon said
. "It is particularly good for acne and chicken pox scars. It helps reduce pigmentation and gives slack skin firmness and elasticity."
Staff at Cozmedics Medical Group comprise doctors, nurses and qualified therapists all trained in the latest procedures with a wealth of experience behind them.
Their approach is holistic with an emphasis on overall well-being.
Treatments include injectables, radiosurgery, photodynamic therapy and collagen induction therapy (needling).
"There is no miracle in a jar," Ms Gordon said.
"We believe in a variety of treatments for skin fitness. Of course moisturisers for hydrating the skin are important, but for ageing or sun-damaged skin, a tailor-made program of different treatments will definitely produce results."
There is no down time after a skin needling session, although your face will look as though you've been lying in the sun all day.
The redness reduces overnight or at the longest, in 48 hours and I had no bruising, so I didn't need the recommended after treatment care of cooling compresses at home.
COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT SKIN NEEDLING
Is it safe?
Yes. It has been a safe procedure in existence for more than 25 years. The treatment is practised by doctors, nurses and aestheticians all over the world.
How will I look immediately after the treatment?
Flushed, as though you've suffered moderate sunburn. You'll also experience skin tightness and mild sensitivity which will diminish in the next 48 hours.
What results can I expect?
Aging skin will be restored to firmness, wrinkles will be smoothed, the skin's texture will improve and pigmentation will be lightened.
How long will the results last?
Result are indefinite or as long as you protect and continue to nurture and care for your skin. Remembering that our skin ages daily, these treatments are designed to hold back that process of degeneration for longer. The treatment results continue to improve over the next 6-12 months when combined with post care treatments.
How many sessions are recommended?
The number of treatments usually start at five, about two to four weeks apart. This will allow you to see excellent results. But it depends on the condition of your skin. This is assessed and discussed.
How should I look after my skin to ensure the longevity of skin needling results?
Maintain a good skincare routine with frequent hydration or moisturisation on a daily basis. Use a skincare with active ingredients that will deliver acceleration.
How much does it cost?
Treatments start at $250 each. However, at Cozmedics we offer package savings based on the number of treatments recommended.
