Email leak part of long running family dispute, says Senator

FORMER Olympian and indigenous Senator Nova Peris has told the Senate allegations about her supposed misuse of public funds for a former lover were part of a long-running family dispute.

Senator Peris came under the spotlight this week after the NT News published emails purported to be evidence the then-sportswoman organised public funds to bring a Trinidadian lover to Australia.

However, Sen Peris has denied the allegations and a review by the Australian Sports Commission has found no evidence she was involved in paying for the Olympian, Ato Boldon, to tour Australia.

While reports alleged she had procured the funds for Boldon to visit Australia, Athletics Australia has also denied any wrongdoing by Sen Peris.

Sen Peris said she had done "nothing wrong". The emails leaked to the News Ltd newspaper may have been obtained illegally, and she could not verify their veracity.

She said the publication of the emails came after a "very difficult" child access and family dispute, in which she was threatened by a party to the dispute that information could become public.

"The release and publication of these emails is an attempt to extract money and embarrass me and my family," Sen Peris said.

"I've always put my children first and I will continue to do so."

Sen Peris said three things were guaranteed in life, that "we will all die, the sun will set each day and each morning it will rise again... today has been one of those days".
