AUSTRALIA has finished third in the Polocrosse World Cup at Shongweni, South Africa.

On Friday, Australia lost to the hosts in a semi-final before beating United Kingdom 25-19 in the play off for third on Sunday night (AEST).

New South Wales player Will Weston was judged the best male player in the third/fourth play-off with United Kingdom star Charlotte Pykett the best female player.

United Kingdom led 3-2 after the first chukka and then the score was 4-all before Australia took the lead to win by six, closer than the 11-goal margin to the Aussies in the round game.

In the grand final, South Africa won 32-23 against Zambia to make it back-to-back cup wins.

The score was 8-all early before the hosts took the lead and were never headed.

In the play-off for fifth, New Zealand won 28-18 against Zimbabwe.

United States secured seventh spot with a 24-19 win against Ireland.

Three Queensland-based players/officials  were part of the Australian team, players Lauren Cant and Trent Collins, and assistant coach Kent Wells.

The 2019 World Cup will be at Morgan Park, Warwick, the third time Warwick will be the hosts.
