Big guns bite the dust at Summerland Series
DAY one of the Summerland Series pairs saw a few unexpected teams make it through while others fell by the wayside.
Summerland Series coordinator Kris Lehfeldt said competition on the green for the trophy and the $25,000 prize-money has been ferocious.
"A few big guns bit the dust," he said.
"So the final 16 teams will match up on Friday."
Lehfeldt said the event was proving exciting with the winners of day two fighting it out for the pairs championship on December 29.
"Sydney players Dave Ferguson from Ettalong is the current Australian indoors bowls champion and Ben Twist from St John's Park recently won the Hong King International for Australia last month, so they will hard to beat," he said.
"Ian Taylor and and Michael Turner from Kingscliff are playing today and Rob Parrella and Paul Staggard from Helensvale are also going to be tough competition, while Sam Luguzza is playing with seven-times singles event winner Neil Burgess, and they are an inspiration."
Meanwhile, the sole female pairs team of Anna Lovasi and Cheryl Moran won two of their three games but lost the section.
Lovasi said the pair were still pleased with their efforts.
"(Although we lost) we are still happy with the way we bowled and that we won two games," she said.
