Byron company crowned macadamia champion at fine food awards
LOCAL company Brookfarm took out nine awards at the Hobart Fine Food Awards for their gourmet nut mix, oils, muesli and more.
The Brothers Blend gourmet nut mix won them the title of Champion while their Lemon Myrtle Infused Macadamia Oil earned them the Reserve Champion crown.
Pam Brook said Brothers Blend, which was the first product her sons Will and Eddie Brook developed, gave her confidence in the future of the family owned and operated business.
"It's great for me that the second generation of Brookfarm as a family business is really coming through," she said.
"They wanted a product that was really fun to eat with drinks at the end of the day.
"It's really exciting with their first product out, they've received a grand champion product."
Ms Brook said she believed the reason for their success came down to the question, would we serve this at our own dinner table?
"If we served it at home it would be exactly what we wanted, that it was really beautiful and really fresh," she said.
"When we're developing a product we never let it go to market unless everybody in the tasting panel has given it 10 out of 10."
Ms Brook said it was important for small producers to receive recognition for their work.
"When you're a smaller producer ... you can often fly under the radar," she said.
"It's really important to let people know that regional produce is really good quality produce.
"It's also great recognition for our consumer that they can buy a brand they might now know so well, but it develops trust between them and our products."
She also noted how important it was to take onboard feedback from awards such as the Hobart Fine Foods Award.
"It's an important benchmark against other products to know that we're doing well," she said.
"If we put something in and it doesn't win anything, you just say, 'let's revisit this', and making sure that it's right."
Brookfarm also won gold for both Brothers Blend and the Lemon Myrtle Infused Oil, silver for their Toasted Muesli with Cranberry, Gourmet Nut Granola, and Florentina products, and bronze for their Natural Oil and Powerfood products.
The national Hobart Fine Food Award is hosted by the Royal Agricultural Society of Tasmania.
