Brumbies kick Cheetahs out of finals

RUGBY: Despite having less than 10% of possession in the final 10 minutes, the Brumbies held on for a thrilling 15-13 win over the Cheetahs in their qualifying final at Canberra Stadium yesterday.

Cheetahs winger Ryno Benjamin scored in the corner in the final minute to give Riaan Smit the shot at goal and the chance to take the game into extra time but his attempt hit the post and bounced away.

The only Australian outfit remaining in the Super 15 finals race, the Brumbies will take on the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday night for the right to play in the final against either the Chiefs or the Crusaders.

The Cheetahs scored two tries to nil but the Brumbies booted five penalties to seal the win.

The visitors led 5-3 early thanks to a well-worked backline play Willie le Roux crossing out wide.

Another penalty allowed the Brumbies to lead 6-5 at the break but the Cheetahs bounced back to lead 8-5 when Smit booted a penalty goal from 42m out.

The Brumbies upped the pressure, regaining the lead in the 59th minute after the visitors collapsed a scrum.

Another penalty gave the hosts a 15-8 lead with 12 minutes remaining.
