Cadets' dreams take flight
THE Leonardo da Vinci quote "when once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the Earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return", resonates most famously with all lovers of flight.
The quote is not lost on the 25 youth members of the Australian Air League Gold Coast Squadron, all of whom are eager to earn their wings and share their enthusiasm for all things aeronautical with the children of Robina.
Branch president Tim Rosen said the squadron was established on the northern Gold Coast in August last year with such success they are now seeking expressions of interest to establish a squadron in the central Gold Coast.
"We are the fastest growing (squadron) in Queensland. We had the privilege of hosting 580 cadets from around the country for the bi-annual National Review," he said.
Parades and reviews are designed to encourage competitive spirit between squadrons and are held at a state and national level.
Mr Rosen said the not-for-profit youth organisation for children aged 8-15 was designed to foster an interest in aviation for a hobby or career.
"It's a civilian-based organisation that started in 1934 even before air cadets," he explained.
"It helps to build self-confidence, discipline, and provide opportunities and pathways into aviation."
There's also fun activities, camps, cooking and guest speakers and real flight time for those aged 16 - the legal age to start to earn a pilot's licence.
