Crowd bowls up to Ballina for comp

BALLINA is bustling this week, with hundreds of extra people in town for the 2013 Senior Inter-Zone Sides Championship.

The event is being held at the Cherry Street Bowling Club and the Ballina RSL Bowling Club in Canal Rd over three days.

With 96 bowlers, their families and spectators, the championship is expected to bring up to 500 people into Ballina.

Ballina RSL Bowling Club president Don Gregor said it was an important state event.

"We'll see some good bowls played," he said.

"These are the state's best seniors; it's very prestigious.

"Bowlers will play two games each day, with the finals on the third day. People have come a long way for this event and they will be making a holiday of it.

"Between food, drinks and accommodation, this is a great boost for Ballina."

Cherry Street Bowling Club's bowls co-ordinator Kris Lehfeldt said the local players, Zone 1, could be in with a chance to win.

"I was involved in picking the team, and I am pretty happy with it," he said.

"If they can get into the semi-final and win that, they will play the final at Cherry Street, where they will have a good advantage.

"They could definitely win it.

"Zone 12 is looking pretty strong and Zone 15 is very professional.

"Traditionally, Zone 10 has been good as well.

"There are some very good players in town for this competition, so it will be good to watch."

The finals will be played at Cherry Street Bowling Club on Thursday afternoon.
