AFTER hail at Grafton's recent race day and drizzle at Ballina's, organisers of the Lismore Cup were staring at weather forecasts all week wondering if the biggest race day of all would suffer the same fate.

Instead, when the gates opened up at 11am punters were greeted with perfect blue skies, light winds, and an ideal track.

And the sunshine brought the crowds, with an estimated 5000 or so through the gates by mid-afternoon.

It was the best crowd for several years, and certainly well up on last year's estimated 3,500 turn out.

"If we can't get a record crowd today, we'll never get a record crowd," Turf Club vice president Mike Cleaver said.

For the well-dressed ladies competing in Fashions on the Field, the sunshine was a chance to ditch those unsightly gumboots and jackets and put on a show.

Winner of the Lady of the Day, Cabarita's Kacey Lloyd, is officially on a winning streak after taking out three similar events on the Gold Coast this season, Stakes Day, the Prime Minister's Cup, and best hat at the Pink Ribbon Cup last Saturday.

Even so, she said she was surprised to win.

"I'm on a roll," she laughed.

"I sort of started with the dress and worked around it. I'm lucky I've quite a collection of accessories because I do a few of these.

"You've just got to be dressed head to toe, I had gloves, nice shows, (and) nice handbag."

Despite attending many events up and down the East Coast, Ms Lloyd said she was a big fan of the smaller regional events.

"They're always my favourite," she said.

Gold Coast-based Fashions on the Field judge Lisa March said there were some "very good" competitors.

She was looking for people who were "very comfortable in their own skin" as well as being impeccably groomed.
