'Devastated' Greens challenge result after Ludlam voted out
THE electoral commission will start a recount of the Western Australian Senate vote, after The Greens challenged the result which saw their Senator Scott Ludlam voted out.
Senator Ludlam, who will serve out his term until June next year, may yet be re-instated for a second term, if the balance of a 14-vote margin returns in his favour.
But the bid may now force out Palmer United Party candidate, Zhenya Wang, who was elected as a first-time Senator after the initial result was called on Wednesday.
Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne said her entire party room was "devastated" by the result, requesting a recount in a bid to keep their power in the upper house.
The Australian Electoral Commission confirmed a recount will be completed, but has not yet released details of when it will begin.
