Ballina, Lismore flouride plants commissioned next week

ROUS Water's four flouride plants will be commissioned next week, following successful tests.

The organisation's chair, Cr Sue Meehan, said the plants - which will fluoridate the water in the Ballina Shire, Lismore and Richmond Valley council areas - would be fully operational by the end of August.

"It is over a decade since the NSW Health Department approached Rous Water with the recommendation that the water supply be fluoridated, presenting a safe, effective way of providing benefits to individuals of all ages in the community," Cr Meehan said.

The fluoride plants have state-of-the-art monitoring and operational equipment to ensure accuracy and consistency.

NSW chief health officer Dr Kerry Chant said drinking water fluoridation was a "safe, effective, efficient and socially equitable approach to preventing tooth decay".
