Gas leak causes early morning rail emergency at Nana Glen
EMERGENCY services rushed to the Orara Valley in the early hours of this morning after reports a train was on fire.
Just before 3am a long goods train bound for Sydney on the main North Coast railway line was stopped at Nana Glen, 30km north of Coffs Harbour, after it was reported fire had broken out in one of the freight cars.
A full emergency response was mounted and it was discovered the suspect car was a 30,000 litre high capacity gas cylinder of hazardous argon gas.
It was leaking plumes of gas which gave the impression of fire.
Police, fire and emergency services staff deliberated for two hours at the scene before the train was allowed to continue south.
While reports are the cylinder was still leaking a visible cloud of gas, it was decided the situation had been contained and the train was safe to continue its journey.
