Gender pay gap still darkens engineering industry

WOMEN engineers continue to earn less than their male counterparts, and were also less likely to hold top management roles, a survey released on Friday revealed.

The Engineers Australia survey of 6000 engineers across the country showed jobs in the technical industry were overwhelming filled by men, Professor Julie Mills said.

Professor Mills, a member of the EA Women in Engineering Advisory Board, said women were also mostly paid less than men in similar industry roles.

"There is considerable evidence that when women engineers are responsible for the care of children, their employment participation rate falls, and is more prevalent in engineering than in other professions with comparable education requirements," she said.

"The substantial gender imbalance in engineering results in the underutilisation of a large pool of highly skilled workers and is detrimental to Australia's economy and productivity growth."
