Gordon name to be celebrated at family reunion
THERE will be a family reunion held in Bowen later this year to celebrate the Gordons' history in eastern Australia.
Northern Ireland-born Nathaniel and Mary Elizabeth Gordon married and moved to Australia with their two children, Esther and Robert, nearly 140 years ago.
They lived in Sydney for a short time before they relocated to the Northern Rivers and bore nine more children.
Some of the children remained on the Far North Coast while others relocated to Queensland.
In 1928 their son Robert started real estate business R Gordon and Son.
The business was passed down to Ray, who was the mayor of Lismore prior to the Second World War.
Ray's son, James Gordon, took over the business.
Currently his son Andrew is business partner with Elaine, Andrew's mother.
Andrew's son Nathan is an employee, and he will take over the firm in the future, becoming the fifth generation business owner.
Andrew said the Gordon family reunion organiser, Bill Gordon, was from Robert's brother Nathaniel junior's family line.
"I'm definitely going to go (to the reunion) ... I'd like to know a bit more about our origins," Andrew said.
The reunion is set for the weekend of August 20-21 and any family member is welcome.
