Grab a bargain, buy during Secondhand Saturday

THIS weekend is all about reusing and recycling, with 650 Secondhand Saturday garage sales taking place today across the region and a Tip Free Day tomorrow for anyone wanting to rid their lives of clutter.

Secondhand Saturday is held during National Recycling Week and education co-ordinator Linda Tohver said NEWaste was thrilled with the number of garage sales registered.

Just in Ballina Shire, she said, 200 garage sales were being held.

Hannah Robertson, of Girards Hill, is holding a garage sale today. She will be bidding farewell to a retro fridge she bought from a little shop on Chapel St, Melbourne, a decade ago.

The 1950s-style, baby-pink fridge looks pretty cool from the outside, but when you open it up, that's where the show really is - it's been refurbished to look like the interior of a car.

While it's in perfect working order, Mrs Robertson explained the fridge hadn't been refurbished on the outside.

"(However) I quite like it old-looking," she said.

She hopes someone will come along to her Parkes St sale and love it too.

If you are looking for a particular garage sale item, trawl through the garage sale listings online.

If you have unwanted items, people can drop them off free to the Lismore Recycling and Recovery Centre in East Lismore tomorrow from 9am-4pm.

Continuing the theme of reuse and recycle, Lismore City Council's free Trash to Art workshop also takes place today.
