Grafton trainer confident of mares’ chances at Ballina
GRAFTON trainer Morgan Butler heads to Ballina today with two undeniable chances - the stayer Ted And Tubs and handy sprinter Silver Trinket.
Ted And Tubs lines up in the Benchmark 65 Hcp (2660m) with Silver Trinket looking for back-to-back wins in the Barlows of Ballina Benchmark 70 Hcp (1305m).
Both are mares and will be ridden by leading apprentice Cassandra Schmidt.
"Both horses are in super order," Morgan said.
"I can't fault their trackwork and hopefully we have a bit of luck."
Ted And Tubs, a five-year-old by Undoubtedly, is searching for his first win this campaign but his recent form has been strong.
Butler admitted this was the race he had set for the mare.
"She's a big chance," Butler said. "She's not really bred to get the trip but her work and the way she races suggest she will.
"She's got no massive turn of foot but keeps grinding away.
"She's not the easiest horse to ride. She can be a bit lazy.
"She was a certainty beaten two starts back at Grafton. She got held up at the wrong time then last time out at Grafton she was coming off a three-week break and raced a bit stale.
"Priscilla (Schmidt) probably left her run at bit late on her. She was a bit unlucky.
"She's a handy mare, no superstar, but gives 100% every time she goes around. She always tries.
"I think she's been crying out for this sort of distance."
Ted And Tubs was beaten 1.5 lengths when fifth to Dusty's Felt over 2350m at Grafton on October 25.
Silver Trinket is coming off a last start win in a 1250m Benchmark 65 event at Ballina on October 13.
A backmarker, Silver Trinket has thrived since the outing.
"A lot of people disregarded her because of her run at Doomben," Butler said.
"It was below par but she was in season and I knew that when we got up there.
"Her previous form was very good. After that she wasn't beaten far at Grafton on a day when it was a front markers track.
"Last start she stood them up a long way but still managed to get home over the top of them.
"Unlike Ted And Tubs she's a mare that likes a gap between her runs. She's only small, about 450 kilos, and it's a matter of keeping the condition on her."
