HIV on the increase in region with influx of sex workers
GLADSTONE GP Superclinic director John Bird says the rising numbers of HIV cases in the region are a cause of concern.
"(There is) a new case of AIDS each week in Central Queensland, which is a real increase, in the instance of AIDS," he said.
Dr Bird said the issues was connected to fly-in fly-out sex industry workers.
"There's a certain element of sexual activity that goes along with FIFO, which is pretty dangerous," he said.
"I think that's part of the scene - chicks and drugs.
"This is a fairly new phenomenon. I gather it is mainly coming out of Emerald."
