Inspired by Jodie to help fund palliative care home

WHEN Naomi Simpson and Amanda Butler were planning a girl's night-in Intimo party, they realised they had a common experience that made them decide to plan a bigger event.

"Both our mums have passed away from cancer in the last 18 months,” New Italy mum Ms Simpson said.

"And we both did palliative care with them.

"When we saw what was happening with Jodie McRae (of Jodie's Inspiration read story here) we decided we would make it a local event.”

The plan is for plenty of nibbles, champagne, and lucky door prizes with funds raised through ticket sales, raffles and Intimo sales.

"Jodie is in the last stages of fighting aggressive breast cancer,” Ms Simpson said.

"It's Jodie's dream to have a palliative care house in Lismore and this is a cause close to my heart.”

Ms Simpson's mother Margaret Hay was diagnosed with secondary bone cancer with an unknown primary source.

"She got out of bed one day and fell, shattering her pelvis and she was always complaining of a sore back,” she said.

Two and a half years later Ms Hay was in her last stay at Maclean Hospital where Ms Simpson said the family spent a lot of their time.

"They were amazing and so good and mum had a beautiful room with a lounge area where the kids could hang out.

"But it was hard as I had a six month old baby and two kids and it was school holidays and I was juggling going backwards and forwards every day.”

Ms Simpson said the idea of a palliative house in Lismore would be of great benefit for families going through a traumatic time.

"It could make the situation less of an ordeal than it has to be,” she said.

"There's nothing nice about palliative care but you can make it bearable.”

Ms Simpson said she has been in touch with the McRae family who are very supportive of the Jodie's Inspiration event.

It will be held on the top deck at the Illawong Hotel, Evans Head on September 23, 6.30pm and Ms Simpson said they are keen to hear from anyone who could donate raffle prizes.

Tickets are $25 and includes a glass of champagne and nibbles.

$5 from every ticket will also go towards Jodie's Inspiration helping to fund a palliative care house.
