Horse racing: It’s cup time at Taree

THE Taree-Wingham Race Club is set to host one of its best two-day carnivals in recent years, according to club chairman Greg Coleman.

Both days of the carnival - today and Sunday - have been supported by plenty of top trainers with large fields resulting.

The highlight will be on Sunday with the $60,000 Taree Gold Cup (2000m).

Coleman said it had all fallen into place.

"Everything's shaping up nicely and it looks like we'll have some luck with the weather which hasn't been the case for the past few Taree Cups, so the public will have no excuse not to come out and enjoy at least one day of racing," he said.

"The track is in excellent condition - you couldn't have it any better - and it's racing as well as any track in country New South Wales."

The Taree Cup will feature horses trained by Kris Lees, Jason Coyle and Paul Perry as well as locals such as Cliff Bashford and Graeme Shultz.

Top young metropolitan jockey Jason Collett will ride Just As Cosmic in the cup and champion country jockey Robert Thompson teams up with good friend Jeremy Sylvester to partner Collar.

"This is the highlight race of the year for us. Your club's cup meeting is the most important for all country clubs," Coleman said.

"It's also an important event for our community and it's taken a lot of hard work to get it to where it is now."
