Human legs discovered in dump prompts calls for furnace

THE discovery of two surgically removed human legs at a Newcastle dump has sparked calls for New South Wales' second medical waste furnace to be built.

A tip worker discovered the severed legs and other medical waste including syringes and vials of blood among general waste.

It is believed the legs came from two different people.

The head of a company pushing for a second medical waste disposal facility said the mix-up strengthened his case, as demand was rising and a lack of competition meant more mistakes would happen.
