Couple heartbroken after baby dies from cold sore
UPDATE: MACKAY Base Hospital child and adolescent health director Dr Michael Williams said an investigation is underway into Eloise's case.
"Unfortunately a case like this will occur every so often anywhere in the world," he said.
"It's been a long time since I've known of another similar case.
A MACKAY couple are bringing awareness to people in the community after their newborn daughter died from a cold sore.
Eloise Lampton was born on November 1 when she contracted the herpes virus.
Eloise was rushed to the Mater Hospital in Brisbane when the hospital diagnosed her with the herpes virus after her parents Sarah Pugh and Douglas Lampton had taken her to the Mackay hospital because they believed she had problems feeding.
Eloise died on November 25 after developing a staph infection. She was just 24 days old.
Eloise's parents, who have three other children, have warned others of the dangers of cold sores.
"Make sure you are washing your hands and taking care with your personal hygiene, it is a must around little kids," Ms Pugh told ABC.
"It's good to bring awareness around this, because honestly this is my fourth child, I just planned to be in hospital for six hours and come home and you know when you have four children you are sort of blase because the other three were so healthy, it is pretty unexpected."
