Man rescued after falling off rocks at North Wall
EMERGENCY services were called to North Wall at Ballina last night, after reports that a man had fallen down the rocks.
Far North Coast Surf Life Saving's emergency response system was activated by police about 8.15pm.
It had been reported that a 43-year-old man had fallen off the northern breakwall, and was suffering serious spinal injuries, cuts and abrasions. Emergency service crews were warned that the incoming tide could make it difficult to treat the patient.
Surf lifesaving personnel, including the Ballina Jet Boat Rescue Service and the duty officer, attended the scene and helped paramedics to stabilise the patient.
Duty officer Jimmy Keough said the man fell about 5m down rocks, into the water, and he was pulled out by witnesses.
He said the State Emergency Service assisted with the rescue and also provided lights at the location.
"The patient was initially taken to Lismore Base Hospital in a serious but stable condition," Mr Keough said.
"But he has now been transferred to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane."
