Mat Lee continues recovery, grateful for support

SHARK attack victim Mathew Lee is still recovering at the Gold Coast University Hospital, but it is hoped he will soon be well enough to move to the Ballina Hospital for rehabilitation.

It has been five weeks since a great white bit his legs while he was bodyboarding near North Wall at Ballina.

The Mathew Lee Official Support Facebook page has reported that Mr Lee suffered major nerve damage during the attack.

He has been operated on, "but at this stage it is still unclear what the impact will be on his long term rehabilitation".

"He has also been recovering from infection associated with his injuries," the Facebook page says.

"It is hoped that in the not too distant future Mat will be admitted to Ballina Hospital to commence rehabilitation.

"With the fundraiser for Mat coming up this Friday at The Point, Ballina, Mat has asked that 50% of the funds raised here be donated to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, a service that helped save his life.

"Mat is amazed at the amount of support he has received and has asked to thank everyone for the love and support they have shown him and his family.

"He is grateful for the many offers of help and generosity by the Ballina community and beyond.

"It is beyond words."

The fundraiser at The Point will start at 4pm on Friday.

There will be karma kegs donated by Stone & Wood and Asahi, a raffle with major prizes from the Ramada Hotel, The Point Restaurant, Surfit Gym Lennox, Jindill Macadamia, T2, Treasury Wines and more.

Raffle tickets are $5 and on sale at The Point Restaurant, Ballina.
