Lennox surfer survives to world cup semis before elimination

LENNOX Head Surfer Adam Melling was beaten in the semi-finals of the Vans World Cup of Surfing in Hawaii.

Melling was the defending champion and was in red-hot form earlier in the heats.

However he could only manage a 10.97 (out of a possible 20) in the semi-final.

Earlier in the day he won his quarter-final heat with a 14.66. There were four rounds of competition before the quarter-finals.

Lennox Head surfer Stu Kennedy also competed and was eliminated in the second round.

The Vans World Cup is the second event in the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing.

The final World Championship Tour event is the iconic Pipeline Masters which is scheduled to start on Sunday.

Meanwhile a handful of Far North Coast surfers are currently competing at the Australian Junior Surfing Championships in Kiama.

Most of them are from Lennox Head with Cali McDonagh, Zac Wightman, Mikey Wright and Luke Condon. Suffolk Park surfer Kian Shahar is also in the under-16s boys division and through to the second round.

McDonagh is also in the second round after finishing second in her opening heat.

Wright won his opening under-16s heat in convincing fashion on Sunday.

The junior championships are expected to finish on Saturday.
