Adam Melling scores upset win in South African surfing comp

THERE has been mixed results for Far North Coast surfers Adam Melling and Owen Wright at the J-Bay Open in South Africa.

Melling delivered an upset in the World Championship Tour (WCT) event when he beat two-time winner and local surfer Jordy Smith in the first round.

Meanwhile, Wright was a surprise elimination in the third round against Adrian Buchan.

Wright is currently ranked third in the world after his big win at the Fiji Pro last month.

"It's not the result I wanted but I felt good and thought I was surfing well," Wright said.

"It was a close heat and a good goofy (left-foot) battle. I'm really looking forward to Tahiti (next WCT event). I love that place.

"Results are just results and the main thing that matters is that you can go through the year feeling good and with a smile on your face, and I'm doing that."

Melling was also eliminated in the third round against American surfer Nat Young.

Meanwhile, former Lennox Head surfer Tyler Wright will look to defend her title at the Vans US Open of Surfing at Huntington Beach, California, this month.
