AUSSIES are chomping at the bit to get their hands on Ford's new Australian-delivered Mustangs, with a confirmed 2000 customers paying deposits months away from launch.
The right-hand drive Pony cars won't hit Australian Ford showrooms until late 2015, but unprecedented demand for the Mustang Fastbacks and Convertibles has seen those 2000 enthusiast customers secure their place in the queue.
At launch the Mustangs are offered with 2.3-litre four-cylinder EcoBoost engines or 5.0-litre V8s, with the latter proving most popular as 42 per cent of total orders are for the Mustang GT Fastback with the V8 and auto transmission.
"Just like in America, we are seeing great early demand for the V8 GT models," said Graeme Whickman, President and CEO, Ford of Australia. "But, we think the EcoBoost model will be a bigger seller longer term and help sustain sales longer than most performance cars as people see its great combination of performance and fuel economy."
It has also been revealed that Australian customers overwhelmingly have favoured Race Red as the most popular colour choice, followed up by Absolute Black and Magnetic.
Ford also confirmed the Performance Pack will come standard for all Mustang models in Australia. This package includes "K Brace" under the bonnet to secure the suspension strut towers to the bulkhead; unique chassis tuning; upsized rear sway bar on the Fastback and heavy duty front springs.
Prices for the new Mustang in Australia have already been confirmed, starting at $44,990 for the six-speed manual transmission Fastback with 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine, or an extra $2500 for the six-speed auto version.
The range will top out at $63,990 for the GT 5.0 V8 Convertible with six-speed automatic. Ford also revealed more than 20,000 Aussies had signed up to be kept informed of any material that comes out surrounding the release of the new Mustang in Australia, hinting at the potential popularity of the car when it lands late this year.
