New Coast burger joint honours daughter's dying wish
SHE loved burgers, her red kelpie cross-cattle dog and her ute.
It were those three things that became the theme for her mobile burger bar business plan.
But Coast woman Abbey Bowman would never see this dream become reality.
Abbey (nicknamed, Abbstar) struggled most of her life with type 1 diabetes.
But she never let it get in the way of her plans.
Even in hospital, the 20-year-old spoke of it with her parents, Kerryann and Jeffrey, and told them exactly how she wanted it to work.
She died suddenly on June 18, 2016, from complications with her diabetes.
A year later, the Bowmans opened Abbstar's Red Dog.
Mr Bowman said his daughter always had a plan to open a burger joint, inspired by her favourite restaurant, Fergburger in New Zealand.
"Pretty much everything was her idea, including the use of a unique trailer - she didn't just want a kitchen in a trailer she wanted to offer the full dining experience," he said.
Abbstar's Red Dog runs out of a 9.5m trailer, which opens out onto a deck for customers to sit at.
"Her idea was that customers should be a part of the trailer and everyone would come together."
Mr Bowman said the project had helped him and his wife find peace.
"If you were in a boat with your friend, your wife and your child and you had to throw someone out - who would be the last person you toss off?
"It would be your child... the love a person has for their child is a whole different kind of love, there is nothing in this world that can compare to the pain of losing a child.
"Opening the bar hasn't helped us to come to terms with her death, but it has helped us come to terms with living a different life."
The mobile burger bar will officially open for service on December 8 at the Caloundra Twilight Markets and every Sunday at the Caloundra Street Fair.
The burger bar specialises in five burgers including the signature Red Dog, the Kelpie, Hen-Pecked, Puppy Pack and Morning Barker.
Mr Bowman said all ingredients were fresh and made from scratch.
"We don't use anything frozen, we make our meat patties from scratch and the chicken is always fresh," he said.
"We kept the menu pretty simple so we could really focus on making the food and environment good."
