New funds to better prepare maths, science teachers

GRANTS worth more than $12 million, aimed to improve the university training of Australia's maths and science teachers, were opened for application on Wednesday.

The grants, listed in last year's federal budget, will be available to all universities which reached level four in the Excellence in Research for Australia rating for maths and science subjects.

Ministers Chris Bowen and Peter Garrett said the new funds would better prepare graduates to teach maths and science once they reached the classroom.

The grants total $12.4 million over three years from 2014, and will help universities design better courses for maths and science teacher graduates.
