New HIV test promising faster results en route to Australia
A QUICK new screening test for HIV - cutting the waiting time for results down from three months to half an hour - will be available in Australia soon.
The new test was approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration on Monday for marketing in Australia.
The 1137 new HIV diagnoses in Australia in 2011, an 8.2% increase over the year, prompted new concerns about the spread of the condition.
Health Minister Tanya Plibersek said the new Alere Determine Combo HIV ½ Ag/Ab test was being used internationally to ensure people newly infected could access treatment more quickly.
The test cannot be used at home, but only by qualified health professionals to ensure it is used properly and the results are interpreted correctly.
All positive results will still require a confirmation with laboratory test results.
