New pavement of Mullum carpark almost finished

WORK is almost finished on the new pavement of Mullumbimby's Station Street carpark.

The final roll and sealing of the new pavement, next to the Poinciana Cafe, will happen on Monday, with line-marking set to take place, weather permitting, on Wednesday.

Byron Shire Council's infrastructure services director Phil Holloway said the works have been challenging on a number of fronts.

"The cooler winter weather has meant that the earthworks have been slower to dry out after rain and have needed to be rerolled and compacted," he said.

"Plus, after the second compact, it was discovered that an old tree root was buried deep under the soil.

"The tree root was not part of the recent tree removal program and was found to cause water to come to the surface during compaction.

"It needed to be removed to ensure that the ground would remain stable and not cause the pavement to collapse or fail in coming years."

Mr Holloway apologised for the unforeseen delays and said the car park would hopefully back in use next week.
