Newman stands by Springborg over stoush on doctor contracts

PREMIER Campbell Newman has come out in strong defence of Lawrence Springborg as the health minister faces increasing criticism after more than a 1000 senior doctors voted on Wednesday night to reject the Queensland Government's offer on individual contracts.

Fronting up to calls from the Opposition for the minister to be sacked, Mr Campbell insisted Mr Springborg was the best health minister this state has had in more than two decades adding that he was responsible for the "total and complete transformation of Queensland Health in the last two-and-a-half years".

The Premier said he had utmost confidence in his minister citing the fact that waiting times for an endoscopy in Hervey Bay had dropped from two years to 19 days on Mr Springborg's watch and that 77% of people now visiting hospital emergency rooms are seen within four hours compared to 63% under Labor.
