Challenge to killer's release

THE man who killed pioneering Australian heart surgeon Victor Chang will remain behind bars until a court dispute over his release is settled.

NSW Attorney-General Greg Smith has challenged a parole board decision to return Chiew Seng Liew, 69, to his home country of Malaysia after his release.

An official appeal will be heard in the Sydney Supreme Court on October 9.

Liew originally was told he would be deported around October 3 but has been remanded until the hearing.

Mr Chang was shot dead in a Sydney street in July 1991.

Liew is currently serving the last of a 21-year sentence for murder.
