Old growth logging plan condemned
NORTH Coast Greens MP Jan Barham has condemned plans by the Forestry Corporation to log old-growth forest in Koreelah State Forest near Woodenbong on the NSW/Queensland border.
Announced on Monday, the logging will threaten the habitat of at least five threatened species and many ancient trees, according to the North East Forest Alliance and Ms Barham, although it will stop short of cutting down trees greater than 1.8m diameter.
"The Government has also made it clear to NEFA representatives that unauthorised persons are not permitted on site," Ms Barham said.
"While the government wants to avoid the public gaze, it has only been through the efforts of forest ecologists and activists that we have been made aware of the loss of these irreplaceable natural treasures."
