Thousands sign petition for new Ballina Marine Rescue tower

BALLINA'S Marine Rescue unit has received more than 3000 signatures on their petition for government funding for a new tower.

But they expect that figure to increase once all the petitions have been collected from around Ballina.

Ballina Marine Rescue's Joan Hurley said the community had been "very supportive" of the unit's efforts to push governments to fund the new tower on North Wall.

She said some people had said the Marine Rescue tower was "more important than a swimming pool", referring to a proposal of council rate rises for upgrades to Ballina and Alstonville pools.

"We've really got the community behind us," she said.

Ballina Shire Council has set aside $1 million for the new tower.

The petition calls on State or Federal governments to cough-up another $500,000.
