Pink for Mum team run relay to find a cure

THE Pink for Mum team is joining the Casino Relay For Life for Sue Gibson, who is fighting breast cancer.

Team captain Tanya Vout said her mother was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer last year.

"She has had a mastectomy and lymph nodes removed from under her arm. The doctor told us he was able to remove it all, thank goodness, although she still underwent chemotherapy and is having radiation therapy at the moment,” Ms Vout said.

Team Pink For Mum has 19 family members in the team, and has raised more than $300. Experiencing cancer first hand has motivated the family to encourage others to take the time to look after themselves.

"Mum's cancer has affected our whole family, and in a sad way it has brought us all closer,'' Ms Vout said. "It has shown us that cancer hits random people at random times. It really needs more research into why and the causes of it. Everyone's aim in taking part in the relay is to find a cure.

"Our message to everyone is to please have regular check-ups with your doctor, regular mammograms and don't leave anything unchecked if you're worried. Early detection is crucial to your diagnosis and treatment.”

The Pink For Mum team joins the Cancer Council event for the first time and will be relaying for 18 hours to raise crucial funds and awareness for cancer on May 6 and 7 at Queen Elizabeth Park in Casino.
