Police investigate possible hate crime

POLICE are investigating whether a gay rights activist, who died following a fire at his Sydney home, was the victim of a hate crime.

Firefighters found Ahmed Ghoniem, 27, critically injured when they were called to his burning Potts Point unit on the weekend.

He was rushed to St Vincent's Hospital where he later died.

An examination of Mr Ghoniem's body has since revealed he was injured before the fire started.

The Egyptian native moved to Australia three years ago and is well loved in Sydney's gay and lesbian community.

Strike Force Lourde has been set up to investigate his death.
