Hip Hop? Pop Hop? Just Pop? It's Mallrat
DUBBED the Hannah Montana of the Australian hip hop scene, Brisbane's Mallrat is an electronic, hip hop, indie and pop artist that, at 18 years of age, is set to make her Falls Festival debut.
She's never performed in Byron Bay before but she has visited the area before, including a trip to Splendour 2016 as a punter, where she enjoyed the music of some of her favourite acts, Crystal Fighters and Ngaiire.
So how does a young lady from Brisbane end up being a rapper?
"I love it when people call me a rapper, and maybe I am, I am happy to call myself one as well but when I listen to my music I am like 'really? What is this?" she laughs.
"Maybe it's just pop music, or Urban. Anything can be Urban."
Asked for influences or inspiration for her music, Mallrat named a few favourites.
"Perhaps (Melbourne rapper) Allday, and he is definitely hip hop, and also Kanye, he is one of my favourite artists ever, and he is hip hop too, but on the other side I really like Lorde and Mo, so there you go."
"I am so excited to be in the same line up with Mo, she is one of my favourites," Mallrat added.
Besides her latest release, Inside Voices, Mallrat will have some new music to test with Falls audiences for her New Year's Eve show.
