Qld gives civil unions the nod

AFTER nearly four hours of late-night debate, Queensland Parliament has voted to allow same-sex civil unions.

MPs voted 47 to 40 in favour of the legislation, prompting applause from the packed public gallery.

Four Labor MPs joinined with the Liberal National Party and crossbenchers to oppose the move, while independent Peter Wellington pledged support and denounced attempts to "intimidate" him.

The Civil Partnerships Act will allow same-sex and heterosexual couples to formally register their relationships with the Queensland Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, a move dismissed by opponents as mimicking marriage but hailed by supporters as an important step towards equality.
