Readers divided over new Lismore hospital carpark

READERS of The Northern Star have varying views regarding the opening of the new multi-story carpark at Lismore Base Hospital.

The carpark has brought an extra 270 car parking spaces to the hospital precinct as part of the $9.27 million project.

Some Facebook commenters were simply pleased to see something had finally been done in regards to parking near the hospital:

"About bloody time, long overdue," Dot Lendon said.

"What an improvement on past issues of parking close to the hospital entry as long as the fee is not exorbitant," Lester Sillett said.

However some people weren't so happy about it:

"Yeah but you have to pay for it. Even the people who work there have to. That's a bit rich," Jadeala Amber Blacky said.

"Nothing to celebrate ... revenue raising from sick people and the people who care for them," Sioux Harrison said.

"Looks like everyone's parked the cars out of the paid parking zone. Don't blame them either It's a forced pay cut," Dennis Pickford said.

"Staff shouldn't have to pay!" Del Warren said.

"Staff should have free parking stickers. It is ridiculous that they don't," Toni Pacey said.

"Casuals didn't even get offered space in the car park. It's all a joke," Natalie Van Der Klei said.

"This is a disgraceful exploitation of both the staff and those that have to use the hospital either as a patient or a family member of those at a time where the last thing they should be worrying about is figuring out how much it's going to cost them," Ash Kilner said.

"The entrance isn't completely suitable for the bigger cars like 4wd etc poor design," Robyn Annette Shannon said.

But others piped back up with these comments:

"$8 a day is reasonable considering it's that an hour at other hospitals. And I'm sure other hospitals staff don't all get free parking either," Felicity Jay said.

"Money for these things doesn't just "appear". Just remember we have only just managed to scrape past a major financial crisis. And for this we have to put in a little ourselves to stay out of one. Paying $8 a day isn't the end of the world when we got the parking we had been asking for, for many years.

Just be happy we actually have this parking now," Anna Barber said.

"People always have something to whinge about! Complain there's no parking, they build a car park and now people whinge about it and having to pay for it, how else is it supposed to be paid for?! This is the normal for big/major hospitals everywhere else. If you don't want to pay for it or use it simply park further away and walk or use public transport!" Chauntelle Piper-Beale said.
