Seeking a queen

CALLING all young women in the Casino and surrounding areas who are passionate about a rural lifestyle.

The search for the 2013 Beef Week Queen has begun.

As evidenced by past young women who have held this prestigious title, it takes a special young lady to wear the crown.

"The aim of the competition is to find the person most suitable to represent the young rural women of the area - it's not a beauty pageant," Casino Beef Week president Stuart George said.

"Entrants are ambassadors for Beef Week and for the Richmond Valley. They are involved in many activities throughout the festival, from attending the various functions to presenting prizes at events."

Entrants are judged on their personality, confidence, general and rural knowledge, presentation and their speech.

Mr George said they were also asked to demonstrate an understanding of their local community and current affairs.

Last year's Beef Week Queen Amy Smith said it was a great learning experience.

"I met so many people in the community I didn't know before," she said.

"My favourite events I got involved with were the Breakfast with the Butchers, the Milking Competition and of course the Beef Queen ceremony."

For hopeful Beef Week Queen contestants, Ms Smith said the best way to approach the competition was to be yourself.

"It comes down to personality and relaxing and having fun," she said.

Ms Smith said she was surprised when she was announced the winner last year.

"I was the youngest contestant by about four years so didn't think I'd win," she said.

The Queen is expected to go to many Beef Week events including Beef Meets Reef in Evans Head and the Beef Week ball.
