North Coast Showgirls off to Sydney

LAST year's showgirls from Alstonville and Casino will represent Zone 1 at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Alstonville Showgirl winner Melanie Loomes from Skennars Head, and Casino Showgirl Tayla Maloney will travel to Sydney for the event, where they will be judged over seven days.

"I am pretty passionate about agriculture and what's happening in the industry," Tayla, 22, said.

"In Sydney we'll be judged on how we dress - but it's not a bikini competition or anything, it's about dressing appropriately.

"We'll also be judged on how we hold ourselves and how we deal with people from all walks of life.

"Being selected to go to the Sydney Royal Easter Show is an absolute dream. I was blown away. I didn't think I would even get through at the local level, so to be going to Sydney is amazing."

Bob Wilson, from the Alstonville Agricultural Society and former showgirl co-ordinator, said it was a big achievement for Melanie.

"We're really proud of her," he said.

"It's an enormous achievement to win Zone 1 and get to Sydney. Once she gets to Sydney, she'll be treated like royalty."

This is the third time the Alstonville showgirl has been selected to go to Sydney since 2005.

Melanie was the 2011 Ballina Shire Young Citizen of the Year and also has been presented with an International Leo of the Year award.
