Son arrested over father’s murder
MICHAEL Martin has been charged with the murder of his father who died during one of two alleged home invasions at his South Murwillumbah home last year.
Michael Martin senior was murdered in the early hours of Friday June 13, 2014, at his unit in Quarry Road, South Murwillumbah.
After a nine-month investigation, Mr Martin's 25-year-old son was arrested at Tweed Heads on Saturday and was charged with his murder.
A week ago Mr Martin junior joined police to make an open appeal to the public for any information that could help apprehend his father's killer.
At the time of his father's death, Mr Martin junior said he was in the apartment, but had been tied up and beaten before the assailants moved on to kill his father.
During the incident Mr Martin junior suffered a head wound.
Mr Martin junior, 25, was refused bail and appeared at Lismore Bail Court on Sunday.
Strike Force Areae - a joint strike force between State Crime Command's Homicide Squad and Tweed/Byron Local Area Command - was established to investigate the murder of 46-year-old Michael Anthony Martin.
At the time of his alleged murder, Mr Martin had barely recovered form being assaulted in another home invasion that occurred at the same apartment two months earlier in April, 2014.
In that incident he and another man were seriously hurt.
