Speed will be on in Sarina

BMX: Our region is home to some outstanding BMX riders.

Today and tomorrow they'll be on show at the Sarina BMX club, where more than 300 riders are expected to compete in the annual Sarina Classic.

Sarina BMX Club president Dave Wray said the track was in top condition for the two-day event.

"It (this carnival) is our big one," he said.

"The club has been going since 1983 and we've had an annual carnival in August ever since.

"The junior participation in the club has been where we've had all our growth, which is great."

Wray said the club had grown from about 60 people to more than 150 in his two years as president.

The club will welcome competitors from as far as Brisbane and Cairns for the two days of racing.

"We have 18 pro riders coming for it which has raised the profile," Wray said. "Riders are from two-years-old to over 50."

Mackay's Tristyn Kronk will be one of the best riders at the event, competing in the open men's category.

Last night, the club received a grant from the Bendigo Bank to upgrade its safety facilities.

Sarina BMX will host next year's Queensland Country Championships, Wray said.

"We have an amazing amount of volunteers who step up and do a lot of work," he said.

Racing begins today from noon and entry is free. The club is located on Hoey St, Sarina.
