Spring carnival off and racing at Ballina

IT'S Time to dust off your fascinators and drag those brightly-coloured suits out from the back of the cupboard: it's spring racing time.

The Ballina Cup is on next Thursday September 8, and there is plenty of prize money to be won, both on and off the track.

Fashions on the Field will feature again this year, as will pop-up eateries, and a beer garden with live entertainment by Fat Albert.

Free shuttle bus can deliver you to and from the event, minors must be accompanied by an adult.

An increase in on track prize money to $280,000 is an added boost to the horse racing industry.

Ballina Jockey Club general manager Matthew Bertram welcomed the legislation change that sees a greater share of the wagering taxation revenue going directly back into the industry.

"This prize money boost presents an excellent opportunity for a greater return on investment for our participants,” he said in a statement.

For the first time, Ballina Cup Day has been declared a Local Events Day. The day is not a public holiday, so individual arrangements with employers need to be made.

Entry is $20, $15 presale from the Jockey Club or the Slipway Hotel.
