Take a bow, Lismore, you’ve raised $250k for cancer research
FOR a town of 30,000 people and a region of 300,000, Lismore and the Northern Rivers communities have shown off their big hearts with almost $250,000 raised for cancer research over six months.
Crackin Cancer Compassionate Fund, Relay for Life and Jodie's Inspiration held sold-out fundraising events, beginning with Jodie's Inspiration's first major fundraising event last October, the Pink Halloween.
Six hundred people attended that event and $100,000 was raised.
Jodie's Inspiration founder, Jodie McRae, was named the 2016 Rex Airlines Regional Woman of The Year and she is the ambassador of the upcoming Mother's Day Classic.
The Lismore & Villages Relay for Life was held at the beginning of the month and it saw 851 people participate and almost $102,000 raised.
Relay for Life Committee chairperson, Craig Beck, said this year's event was full of community spirit.
"This community has a huge heart," he said.
"With something like cancer there's very few lives who aren't touched by it and we all try to do what we can to help in the fight.
"The Relay for Life is one of those events Lismore and other areas embrace as a wonderful opportunity that helps raise awareness, support and much needed funds."
The Crackin Cancer Compassionate Fund committee members organised their first ever Karaoke Cup this month.
This businesses-targeted event had 19 business people singing karaoke in front of 800 people and it raised $20,000.
One of the attendees, Nancy Casson from Workforce Skills & Training, said the night went off without a hitch.
"I want to acknowledge Patrick Fitz-Bugden, an ideas man," she said.
"Without him this event couldn't have happened ... look at how much money he raised for cancer."
Mr Fitz-Bugden had endless praise for the businesses that chipped in to make the night a blast and raise funds for the community's most vulnerable.
Cancer fundraising in our region is far from over, with the Ballina Mother's Day Classic just a week-and-a-half away on Mother's Day.
I think its a community with a huge heart. the fact that , with something like cancer theres very few lives who arent touched by it and we all try to do what we can to help in the fight.
Events like Relay for Life , its one of those events the lismore region, they embrace it as a wonderful opp for a combined community event that helps to raise a lot of awareness support and much needed funds.
