Thor: Ragnarok to film exclusively in Queensland

THE third installment of Marvel's popular superhero franchise Thor will film entirely in Queensland.

The action film, which stars Aussie Chris Hemsworth as the Norse god Thor, will start pre-production in January and will begin shooting in June, 2016.

Screen Queensland today announced the first details of the deal, which has been in the works for months since Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk met with Marvel executives in June in Los Angeles.

"This is a huge win for Queensland and I am thrilled that Thor will be filming exclusively in our state," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"As our economy diversifies, Queensland is demonstrating its strength as a lead destination for filmmakers both internationally and locally, and my government is doing what it can to ensure that Queensland remains a global hub for the screen sector.

"The production will spend more than $100 million AUD in Queensland and will employ over 750 Queensland crew."

The studio will film at many locations throughout Queensland including scenes at Village Roadshow Studios at the Gold Coast.

Kiwi filmmaker Taika Waititi will direct the film, with actors Tom Hiddleston (Loki) and Jaimie Alexander (Lady Sif) already confirmed to reprise their roles.

Mark Ruffalo will also make the crossover from The Avengers films as Bruce Banner/Hulk.

The news follows Foreign Minister Julia Bishop's announcement yesterday that Australia had secured two feature films for production next year. The other film is director Ridley Scott's next Alien film.
