Turkey colours in the Titans game
A RETURNING Will Matthews wore Kyogle Turkeys colours in his first game back with the Gold Coast Titans in the NRL on Sunday night.
Titans players turned out wearing club socks from their junior clubs for the first round 30-28 win over the Canberra Raiders at Cbus Stadium on the Gold Coast.
New fullback Michael Gordon wore green socks from his Tweed Coast Raiders days while winger Anthony Don was in blue representing the Grafton Ghosts.
Gordon made his Titans debut on Sunday night and it was Matthews' first game back on the Gold Coast since 2011.
Matthews had not played since the preseason last year when he dislocated his hip in the Charity Shield game against South Sydney.
Gordon made an impression in his first game and kicked the winning goal from in front in the final minute.
"It was still a pressure kick even though it was in front,” Gordon told Titans media.
"I had to do my best to soak up some time and it was a nice feeling to see it go over.
"The wife and kids came up and the (Cabarita) boys hired a bus with about 40 of them and I could hear them in the stands.”
Gordon will be a handy addition at the Titans and has said he will rejoin Tweed Coast for a stint in Northern Rivers Regional Rugby League when he retires from the NRL.
In other games, Ballina junior Brian Kelly was strong and scored a try in a losing effort for Manly against the Newcastle Knights on Friday night.
Elsewhere, Casino product Cody Walker bagged a try-scoring double for South Sydney in its 32-20 loss against New Zealand in Perth Saturday.
