Vegan cafe with Coast's best burger gains popularity

AFTER serving hot food for less than two months, Nambour's 'Delicats' eatery has taken the Sunshine Coast cafe scene by storm.

Earlier this month the deli was officially voted the best burger on the Coast in an online poll conducted by the Sunshine Coast Daily.

In an interesting twist, the popular eatery is entirely vegan, with all of their meals plant based and containing no animal products.

Delicats owner Wallea Eaglehawk said much of their popularity was about making plant-based food accessible to both vegans and meateaters.

"Sometimes we are full of vegan customers, but a lot of our regulars have just stumbled across us and stayed because they liked it," she said.

"We are trying to cater to people who aren't vegan and offer the appeal of fast food without the typical elements, but still the good price.

"It was very cool (winning the poll)...a lot of people came in to try it and they are just so keen...we've already developed a big following on the Coast and even people who aren't vegan are excited."

The online poll ranked fellow vegan cafes Elixiba and MooFree Burgers - both located in Maroochydore - as second and third respectively, ahead of their meat based counterparts.

Delicats co-owner Alex Coolican said the vegan movement was definitely here to stay.

"People are really getting it, it's awesome," he said.

"(Delicats) has been three years in the making, so we wouldn't have done it if we didn't know that we could.

"We don't get much negativity at all, or if we do we don't pay attention to it."

After first opening purely as a coffee shop near the railway station, the young owners relocated and renovated their current space at 70 Howard St, opening earlier this years.

Delicats is open 8am-4pm Tuesday to Saturday with both dine in and takeaway options. For more information visit www.delicats.com.au.
